SIMTech is pleased to invite you to the SIMTech Invited Research Lecture on Thursday, 21 September. Details as appended below.

Invited Research Lecture
Robotics in europe and lessons for the robotics community in SINGAPORE

The Speaker : Professor Rolf D Schraft
Head, Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation (IPA), Stuggart, Germany

Date : 21 September 2006 (Thursday)

Time : 4.00pm-5.00pm

Venue : Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology
Auditorium, Level 3, Tower Block
71 Nanyang Drive
Singapore 638075
(@ NTU campus)

The Invited Research Lecture features distinguished technology leaders who are visiting Singapore to speak on their research expertise. The topic is generally relevant and of interest to both the research community and industry. The inaugural Invited Research Lecture was held on 26 February 2003. Since then, we have invited many renowned speakers from all over the world, benefiting professionals from different disciplines.

This lecture aims to provide a thorough overview of the research and development of industry-oriented robotics technologies in Europe. It is believed that robots will generate great impact on every facet of the society in this century. Emphasising on industrial and service robots, this lecture will first give a broad overview of the state-of-the-art robotics technologies in Europe. The new approaches of the European robot manufactures will then be introduced. A number of representative robotics projects conducted in the Fraunhofer-Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation (IPA), Germany, will be highlighted, which include both industrial robots for difficult-to-automate manufacturing processes and service robots for professional, domestic, and hospitality applications. Some challenging issues, such as flexibility, safety, man-machine interaction, and navigation will be addressed. With many years of R&D experiences in robotics, the speaker will also share his points of views on the trends and future perspective for both the industrial and service robots. As an open discussion, the lessons and opportunities for the robotics community in Singapore will be proposed.

About the Speaker
Professor Schraft is Head of the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation (IPA), Stuttgart, one of the largest institutes for applied research in Germany. He graduated from the University of Stuttgart in Mechanical Engineering in 1969 and received his doctorate degree in 1976. He started the research group for Material Handling and Assembly at the IPA which did numerous projects and developments for national and international research agencies and mainly for industry. Right now he is very much involved in promoting and developing service robots.

He has lectured at the University of Stuttgart and the University of Dortmund since 1977 and 1981 respectively. He is an honorary Professor at the University of Dortmund since 1986. Professor Schraft received numerous awards including the Golden Robot Award in 1986, the JIRA Award (Japanese Industrial Robot Association), Japan in 1990 and the Joseph Engelberger Award in 1992, from the Robotics Industries Association, USA In 1997 the University of Timisoara/Romania conferred the "Doctor honoris causa" to Professor Schraft. In 1998 Professor Schraft was conferred the "Doctor honoris causa" by the Georgian Technical University of Tiflis / Georgia.

He is a member Verein Deutscher Ingenieure (VDI); Japan Industrial Robot Association (JIRA); British Robot Association (BRA); Robot Institute of America (RIA); National Coordinator International Federation of Robotics; Chairman of the International Federation of Robotics (1998-1999); Member Editorial Board Japanese Journal of Advanced Automation Technology; Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI), etc.

Professor Schraft has published more than 500 publications in national and international journals and more than 50 books and contributions for books.

Who Should Attend
Industry professionals, R&D directors, managers, engineers, researchers and academic staff and students in the areas of mechatronics, robotics, and automation will find this lecture very informative and beneficial.

Admission is free. All are welcome. Seats are available on a first-come-first-served basis. Pre-registration for the lecture is necessary.
